The winter air is getting so dry and our little ones really feel it. Dry sinuses and itchy skin can make it harder for them to settle and stay comfortable at night. This change often shows up before we even think to check the environment.

If your baby or toddler is waking more this week, it might simply be dryness in the air. A cool mist humidifier, a slightly warmer sleep sack and keeping the room comfortable can make a big difference. You are not imagining the shift and you are not doing anything wrong. Dressing your baby for sleep doesn’t have to feel confusing. A simple rule I love is to put them in whatever you are wearing plus one extra layer.
Our little ones can’t regulate their temperature the way we can, so giving them that gentle buffer helps them stay comfortable all night long.

Something I remind parents of all the time is that the temperature outside absolutely impacts the temperature inside. Even if your thermostat is set, houses cool down overnight and babies experience a natural dip in body temperature in those early morning hours. If they are under dressed, that drop can lead to early wakes.

I recommend leaning slightly on the warmer side so their bodies have enough support through that temperature shift. Cozy, safe layers help their sleep stay settled and predictable.

😴 When School Stress Shows Up at Bedtime

With progress reports coming out soon, it’s common for older kids to feel a little anxious and sometimes, that stress doesn’t show up in words… it shows up at night.

You might notice:
🌙 Trouble falling asleep
😮‍💨 Restless nights or waking up more often
💭 Big thoughts right before bed (“What if I fail?” “What will my teacher say?”)

These are all signs your child’s nervous system is working overtime and their sleep may be the first thing to take the hit.

Here are a few ways to help:

🗣️ Talk before bedtime. Create space earlier in the evening to chat about school worries, so their mind can quiet before bed.
🌿 Keep routines predictable. Familiar steps bath, book, light off, tell the body it’s safe to rest.
💤 Focus on calm connection. A back rub, a few deep breaths together, or quiet music can help them settle.
🤍 And remember: reassurance goes further than results. Remind them they are loved and supported no matter what the report says.

If your partner’s away and you’re holding down the fort solo, here are a few things that can make the week feel smoother for everyone:

💛 Keep routines simple
You don’t have to do it all. Stick to familiar bedtime cues same songs, same stuffy, same snuggle spot even if the schedule’s a little off.

🕯️ Build in calm connection
Kids might feel extra clingy when one parent is gone. Add a few extra minutes for cuddles, bedtime stories, or a short FaceTime with Mom/Dad before bed.

🥣 Plan easy wins
Prep quick meals, say yes to easy dinners, and let go of the guilt for screen time or skipped baths. Connection > perfection.

😴 Protect your rest too
When your little one’s asleep, don’t rush to “get everything done.” Rest, reset, and remember this is temporary.

🌿 And most importantly… this isn’t the time to aim for perfect or be rigid about every routine. If all else fails, do what you need to survive and preserve your peace (and your sleep!). You can always reset when things go back to normal. 💛

Daylight savings is coming up this weekend, and it can definitely throw things off for a few days 😅

There are two ways you can handle it, you can start shifting naps and bedtime a little earlier each day leading up to the change, or just go for it and stick to your usual schedule on Sunday, even though the clock will say it’s an hour earlier.

Since most of us don’t have full control over nap times anyway, the “rip the Band-Aid off” approach often ends up being the simplest. A few early mornings and your little one will be back on track before you know it 💛

Hope had her very first dental cleaning last week and in true Hope fashion, she absolutely rocked it. 💪✨

We went to @evergreendentalcare_manotick , and they made it such a wonderful experience. They were hosting a Halloween event, so she got to wear her costume, meet the kindest hygienist, and even see Dr. Sidon, who was amazing with her.

It wasn’t scary or stressful at all, just fun and full of smiles. They had healthy snacks in the waiting area and fun games, which of course Hope LOVED ❤️

She left proudly holding a certificate congratulating her on her first cleaning, plus a loot bag filled with thoughtful non-food treats (such a win! 😂).

It’s great advice in the early months — tuning into your baby’s hunger cues helps build trust and meet their needs. But often, as babies grow, we begin to see some fall into a pattern of snacking instead of having full meals.

👉 Snackers take smaller, more frequent feeds throughout the day (and night!)
👉 Meal takers take fuller feeds and tend to sleep for longer stretches

Snacking = poor sleep.

There’s nothing wrong with that if it’s working for your family but if those frequent feeds are leading to more night wakings or restless sleep, it might be time to look at your feeding and sleep patterns together.

Night Wakings: What’s Really Going On?

When babies older than 4 months are waking frequently in the night, the solution is often sleep learning — teaching your baby independent sleep skills.

But what if your little one already knows how to fall asleep independently and is still waking more than they need to for feedings?

Try these 3 tips:

1️⃣ Prevent overtiredness.
When babies get too tired, their bodies release adrenaline, giving them that “second wind” that can throw a good night’s sleep off track. Using a good, age-appropriate schedule can also take the guesswork out of things and help your baby stay well-rested.

2️⃣ Reconsider nighttime feedings.
If your baby is waking up hungry after 6 months of age, it’s possible that those wakings are happening out of habit rather than true hunger. This can look like hunger but is often because their body has grown used to having milk during the night. Once your baby’s weight is on track, it’s developmentally appropriate to begin working toward dropping those feeds.

3️⃣ Create a plan.
If you’ve tried these things and are still struggling with frequent wakings, I offer intensive support to help your family reach your sleep goals with clarity and confidence.

✨ First Day Feels ✨

Today was Hope’s very first day of school… and wow, did that hit me right in the heart. 💕 She was such a rock star, took her teacher’s hand and off she went without a glance back. Bittersweet doesn’t even begin to cover it. We’re so proud of our girl.

But I’ll be real with you, last night’s sleep? Rough. Totally expected with all the change and excitement leading up to this milestone. When those nights happen, I go right back to basics: structure, routine, and all the extra cuddles and love before bed. That’s what helps us reset.

To all the parents whose little ones started school this week, I see you. Sending so much love as we all navigate these big transitions. 💛
